He moved back to Waco, where his father, Joe Johnson, and judge Bill Logue, served as longtime state district judges. Barry Johnson defeated Abel Reyna 60-40 percent in the Republican primary to win the district attorney’s job. He held the McLennon County DA's office as a Republican.
